First Impressions: Application and Initial Feel

The initial spray was surprisingly intense. It felt more like a forceful stream of water than a fine mist. This heavy application was initially concerning, leading to a feeling of being ‘punched with liquid’. Despite the aggressive application, the spray itself didn't leave any visible spots or white cast on my face. My initial concern was quickly eased by the even distribution despite the powerful spray.

After blending with a beauty blender, my makeup looked surprisingly smooth and well-emulsified. The initial concerns about the spray's intensity quickly dissipated; my skin felt comfortable and the makeup looked even and flawless. The baking I'd done seemed to integrate with the setting spray flawlessly.

The matte finish was immediately noticeable and promising. Even though the spray was intense, it didn’t disrupt the makeup; the effect was a beautifully blended, smooth look.

10-Hour Wear Test: Sweat, Heat, and the Reality Check

After a workout and a Texas heatwave (104 degrees!), some oil breakthrough was expected. The setting spray did manage to hold up remarkably well considering the circumstances. The extreme heat and humidity obviously challenged the setting spray but it managed to keep the makeup looking relatively intact.

There was noticeable creasing, particularly between the eyebrows and along smile lines. Some areas, like the nose, showed significant wear due to the heat, sweating, and the need to constantly blow my nose. The level of creasing seemed unusual for my typical drugstore makeup routine, though the high temperatures are likely responsible.

Despite some noticeable oil breakthrough and creasing, my makeup was still surprisingly presentable for such extreme conditions. The makeup held up well for a majority of the day; oil was expected for such high temperatures and humidity.

Day Two: Powder Foundation Test

On day two, I tested the setting spray with only powder foundation to see if it could emulsify it effectively. The spray, as on day one, proved to have a strong, forceful application. The intensity remained similar; yet again my reaction was one of surprise at the forceful application.

Surprisingly, the powder foundation emulsified incredibly well after blending with a beauty blender; there were no visible spray dots or areas where the spray lifted the powder. The result was a naturally smooth and blended appearance, mimicking liquid foundation. There were no noticeable issues of streaking or patches during application.

This was a very pleasant application, despite the strong spray. This was much preferred over the intensity felt during the liquid foundation application.

Day Two, 10-Hour Wear Test: Powder Foundation Results

After another 10 hours, the oil breakthrough with powder foundation was significant across the entire face. While the initial application was impressive, oil was once again the biggest concern. The workout on day two involved less intense movement than the previous day; still, it was clear oil was already building up.

Similar creasing issues appeared between the eyebrows and smile lines. Foundation loss around the nose was also evident; due to the spicey food consumed and constant need to blow my nose.

Although the setting spray did a good job with the powder application at the start, its long-term oil control performance was still questionable. The intense spray didn't seem to benefit the long-term wear, even with powder foundation.

Final Verdict: NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray

The NYX Matte Finish setting spray is a mixed bag. Its intense spray mechanism is both a strength and a weakness. While it delivers quick, even coverage, the forceful application is less than pleasant. The setting spray emulsified liquid foundation beautifully; however, it struggled to maintain a matte finish throughout the day, regardless of whether liquid or powder foundation was used.

Oil breakthrough was consistently a problem, especially in high heat and humidity. Creasing was also a noticeable issue across both wear tests. While it managed to keep my makeup looking presentable for several hours, it didn't live up to its ‘long-lasting’ claim, especially in challenging conditions.

Overall, this setting spray is just 'okay'. It's not terrible, but it's not remarkable either. For the price, there are likely better options on the market, particularly for those with oily skin who need stronger oil control. The nozzle needs improvement, and the claim of mattifying the makeup throughout the day is not entirely accurate.
