Unboxing and First Impressions

I received three Smashbox LA Lights products: Highlight Hollywood, Malibu Berry blush, and Beverly Hills blush. Each comes in a sleek stick format with a protective cap and a small sponge applicator. The packaging is simple yet elegant, consistent with the Smashbox brand.

The Hollywood highlight is a pearly pink shade, while the blushes offer a range of pink tones. Malibu Berry appears darker and more pigmented compared to Beverly Hills, which is a lighter, more subtle pink.

The texture of the sticks feels creamy and blendable. The 5g size seems adequate for these types of products, promising decent longevity.

Application and Blending Techniques

I tested two application methods: direct application with the stick followed by blending with the included sponge, and direct application with finger blending. The sponge provided a smoother, more even application, while finger blending yielded a more intense color payoff.

I applied Malibu Berry blush to one side of my face and Beverly Hills blush to the other, allowing for a direct comparison. I also experimented with applying the highlighter to key areas of my face, such as my cheekbones, nose, and cupid’s bow, focusing on blending.

I noted that using my fingers seemed to remove some of my existing foundation and bronzer during blending, suggesting the sponge might be a better tool for seamless application.

Initial Impressions in Natural Light

Under natural light, the color difference between the two blush shades became more apparent. Malibu Berry provided a bolder, darker flush, while Beverly Hills offered a subtle enhancement.

The sponge applicator proved more effective for blending, creating a seamless and natural finish. The color payoff was more even and less patchy compared to finger blending.

The Hollywood highlighter, although cool-toned, provided a nice lift to the face when applied to high points, adding dimension and brightness.

Longevity and Final Thoughts

After several hours of wear, the makeup began to look slightly greasy, especially in areas where I hadn't used setting powder. This suggests these products might not be ideal for individuals with oily skin.

The Malibu Berry blush provided a more flattering and noticeable pop of color compared to Beverly Hills. The highlighter, despite being cool-toned, blended well and added dimension but did not impress.

While the products performed well on dry skin days, the combination of potential oiliness and price point makes them a less attractive option for frequent use.
