MAC 168 Angled Contour Brush: A Multi-Purpose Workhorse

The MAC 168 Angled Contour Brush is a versatile tool, suitable for applying contour, blush, and even highlighter. Its angled shape makes it ideal for precise contouring, while the soft bristles blend seamlessly. I used to use it primarily for blush application. While currently not in my daily rotation due to my large collection, it remains a high-quality and soft brush.

I've found that it works well with cream and liquid products, effectively blending them for a natural finish. However, I prefer the Sephora 93 Pro Blush Brush for its slightly softer bristles and denser packing, providing superior blending.

MAC 170 Angled Foundation Brush: Dense and Soft

The MAC 170 Angled Foundation Brush is a dense, soft brush designed for cream and liquid foundation application. The densely packed fibers ensure full coverage and a smooth application. I used this brush frequently when I first purchased it and loved the smooth, even coverage it provided.

Its densely packed bristles make it a favorite for achieving flawless coverage. I even purchased its smaller counterpart (to be reviewed in Part 2). For those seeking a luxurious, high-coverage brush, the MAC 170 is a worthwhile investment.

MAC 134 Large Powder Brush: Discontinued but Still Available

The MAC 134 Large Paddle Brush is no longer available directly from MAC, but can be found from resellers. Use caution when purchasing from resellers to avoid counterfeits. This large brush is designed for applying powder products, particularly bronzers, to the face and body.

While I initially used this brush for bronzing, I now prefer the Sephora 80, which offers softer bristles and a more desirable application. Given the availability of superior, more affordable alternatives, I would not recommend purchasing this discontinued brush.

MAC 150 Large Powder Brush & MAC 129 Blush Brush: Alternatives Exist

The MAC 150 Large Fluffy Powder Brush is designed for applying powder products, but I find its bristles a bit rough. The MAC 129 Blush Brush, while I used to love it, has been replaced in my routine by softer, more efficient alternatives.

Both brushes are now surpassed in my collection by Sephora options, specifically the Sephora 5050 (for powder) and Sephora 96 (for blush). While the MAC brushes are high-quality, the Sephora brushes offer a more desirable feel and application.

MAC 187 & 130 Duo Fibre Brushes: Not Recommended

The MAC 187 and 130 duo fibre brushes are designed for complexion products and skincare, suitable for liquid, cream, and emollient formulas. However, I personally find them streaky and not ideal for my preferred application methods.

While these brushes were once popular, I haven’t found them to be a good fit for my makeup application style. Many other brushes offer superior performance and better value. I would not recommend purchasing either of these brushes.

MAC 109 Small Contour Brush: A Versatile Option

The MAC 109 Small Contour Brush is a versatile tool for applying various complexion products. Its small, rounded shape makes it ideal for precise application in hard-to-reach areas. I previously used it for foundation, but now mainly use it for blending color corrector.

While not essential, it offers versatility. Its compact size makes it great for detailed contouring or blending color corrector. While other multi-purpose brushes exist, this one maintains its own unique niche. Consider it if your preferences align with its features.

MAC 190 Foundation Brush & MAC 184 Fan Brush: Highlighting Hero

The MAC 190 Foundation Brush is designed for liquid and cream foundations but isn't suitable for buffing motions. The MAC 184 Fan Brush, however, is a different story. While designed for light dusting of powder, I use it for highlighting.

Despite the MAC 190’s current discounted price, its limitations make it less desirable. Conversely, the MAC 184 is a standout for applying highlighter, providing a precise and controlled application. This is a highly recommended brush.

MAC 128 Dual Fibre Brush & MAC 192 Concealer Brush: Avoid These

The MAC 128 Dual Fibre Blush Brush and MAC 192 Concealer Brush are both unique but ultimately underwhelming. The 128’s dense bristles aren't ideal for blush application, while the 192's waxy bristles are not a favourite for me.

Neither brush provides a superior application experience compared to more versatile and efficient alternatives. I strongly advise against purchasing either of these brushes.

Overall Conclusion: MAC Brushes - A Mixed Bag

This review reveals a mixed bag when it comes to MAC makeup brushes. Some brushes, like the 184 Fan Brush and 170 Angled Foundation Brush, excel in their intended use and are worthy investments. Others, however, are outperformed by more affordable and readily available alternatives from other brands.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to purchase MAC brushes hinges on personal preference and budget. While MAC brushes are undeniably high-quality, the existence of numerous equally effective and less expensive options should be carefully considered.
